Motherhood and Our First 4th as a Family!

I know Erin and I have been MIA for about a month!! Well there is a very good reason, Jackson James Austin finally arrived on June 5th, at 1:06pm.  My little man arrived at an adorable 8lbs 1oz and 22inches long!  He is a big boy just like his daddy!  Motherhood is blissful, yet exhausting, but I couldn’t feel more blessed to be his mommy!  Today is my baby’s 1 month birthday… and I can’t believe it is going by so dang fast!  This last month has been a blur, just trying to learn how to be a mom, and focus on about 1/3 the sleep!  Between battling jaundice, and breast feeding… my days have been crazy!!  I am now getting back into the swing of things, so expect more fun and informative posts on Shutter Momma!

This weekend we were actually brave enough to celebrate our nations birth with a bbq with family and friends… and of course some pics of Senor Monkey Face.  It was 104 at our house, so while everyone else hung out in the pool, which I have about 2 more weeks before I can enjoy, Jackson and mommy spent some time having fun with pictures inside!  Daddy helped too!  Capturing a fun holiday moment doesn’t require funky backdrops or lighting.  For these images we put Jackson (and ourselves) in front of a big window in the living room, used our coffee table with a white shag rug over it, and a bib, white onesie, and a festive flag!!  Now I’ll have to think of an idea for labor day!

Here are some shots of my crazy, but wonderful, new family…

Erinn’s Baby Shower!

As you all know, Erinn is pregnant and due in just a couple of weeks now! Last month I helped host her baby shower, it was so much fun and I loved all the DIY details! Here are some of the detail shots form the shower.

Erinn’s nursery is Owl themed, so we decided to use that as our theme for the shower as well! We used shades of blue, green, orange and lots of burlap! (I am obsessed with burlap right now)

When were were trying to figure out what we were going to use for centerpieces, I wanted to somehow incorporate owls. I ran across these online and used burlap and felt to make them. I use a different color combo for each table. I didn’t want them to just be flat on the table, so I went to the Dollar Tree, found some crystal candlesticks and spray painted them dark brown, then I just used my bff, the hot glue gun to attach all of them. They came out super cute.

Our yummy dessert table!

We used mini-chalkboards for the labels for all of the food and drinks.

I made the banner using burlap, super easy!

The favors were a fresh chocolate chip cookie wrapped in a cd sleeve, found it on my favorite craft blog eighteen25!

And finally one of Erinn and I…

I hope you enjoyed your shower E, I can’t wait to meet your little man!

More soon, but until then….happy trails!:)

How To’s :: Backlighting

As a photographer who loves natural light, most of my images contain an amount of back lighting.  Backlighting refers to placing the lighting, whether natural, like the sun, or artificial, like a flash, behind the subject you are shooting.  This technique makes the edges of your subject glow, while other part of the subject remain darker.  This is also how you can accomplish getting those silhouette images, where your subject is black, and the background has lots of color!  I personally love backlighitng! I love the effect it creates, and the softness it adds to my pictures.

To backlight properly, place your subject infront of a light source, usually the sun.  If a little bit of the sun peeks around the subject, you might get an effect known as flare, but we will talk about that in another post!  You want to make sure your manual settings are set to expose properly for the subjects face, not the background.  Like I said before, the background may be washed out a bit, and over exposed, but I am not a landscape photographer, so I do not expose for the background in many cases.  It can take a couple test shots before you have the image properly backlit, but once you do, the edges around your subject should glow.  Here is a few images of backlighting:

Tomorrow I will post about how to create a silhouette effect with your pictures.  So be sure to check in, this effect is really cool, and can make for an amazing picture of your little ones, or family!  Happy Shooting!!!
